California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened wildfire risks and strained its enormous farming industry.
An Update Indicates An Absence of Dryness
Thursday's report from the national drought tracker confirmed that California in its entirety is clear of any level of drought. This development resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Until late December, regions like northeastern California were deemed unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 washed away those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge
But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is too early to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance for the coming seasons.
