From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled
Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.
The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
With an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.
Initially, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might appear unsuited, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
First, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.
Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then settled his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd pursuing him.
Character Drivers
Additionally, each member has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:
- Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
- The adventurer has experience in the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
- The warrior and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
- Yet, their status as key figures in the influential clan could enable the party reach areas they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and Wicander betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
- Teor is marked for death by the clan.
This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.
Upcoming Developments
According to episode three’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Questers and Schemers parties.
Audiences can expect finding out which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
