Entire Career of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Analysis Says

Based on fresh research, the median worker in the UK would require over five decades of earnings to attain the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Widening Wealth Gap Over Time

The study examined wealth distribution information from the Covid pandemic period and determined that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead associated with the analysis commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee setting aside their entire income across their entire working life would still not be able to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The research discovered that the gap between the assets of the typical individual and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had widened to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.

The researcher added: "These differences are especially alarming as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – those who commence life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the financial disparity growing in absolute terms, the portion of total wealth in the UK owned by the richest households – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

Termed "unearned" appreciation, by means of growing real estate costs and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the analysis.

These appreciations generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the research shows – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in actual value, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed significant geographic differences, with the typical amount of assets in recent years reaching £290k in the SE of England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, compared with £110k in the NE of England.

COVID Era Impact

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate countless homes were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
