Ghostface Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
