Jailhouse Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He battled the legal system and the legal system prevailed.
A couple of months after receiving a 27-year sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears destined for incarceration.
Expected Incarceration
The convicted plotter – who has been under house arrest in his estate while a set of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amid mounting talk that he will be transferred to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.
Historical Remarks on Prisoners
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing ex- military man displayed little sympathy for the country's prison population.
“What’s the need to offer those scoundrels a easy time?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to finish there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Prison Destination Speculation
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week toured the prison in an obvious effort to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the last election race – implied it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the standard of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells holding four dozen inmates: “That is virtually one meter squared per prisoner.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the horrible meals,” remarked the senator.
Backers React
He is not the lone figure voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.
Penning in a major newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the biggest wrong in its past”.
“This is an unfairness that erodes the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” he stated.
Divided Popular Opinion
That may be true due to the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his expected imprisonment has also gladdened the spirits of many other people who feel he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to block the elected leader from becoming president – and also scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to receive respectful handling – but respectful care while incarcerated. He must not continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the tough handling of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights are not for offenders – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.
“He is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading conduct”.
Possible Jail Environment
Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about thousands of inmates, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular leader's home, around a short distance away.
As per information, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and additionally a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report stated.
Partisan Comments
He criticized the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his fate in the {
