Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
