Meteorologists are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, meaning additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is utterly essential.
