Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The White House did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders suggesting Trump had pushed him to give up significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would merely represent a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president said discussions about the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
