The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
