The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
