This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
