Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Incident as Police Persist in Manhunt for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack at Brown University were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the only individual of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also posted words of sorrow publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

An additional nine individuals were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a search at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“There is a killer at large,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our city”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Officers that raided the lodging found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was detained, according to reports.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one student was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his bright future.”

National Context

The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
