Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down onto fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Offers Little Respite from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been active since last fall, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a single household — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day began removing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population live in improvised tents since their houses were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – 60 males and forty females – had been lost their lives since the truce began because of armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected cases where enough details had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while enduring shortages of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently required during the winter months. This marks the third winter after the war between Israel and the group started on a date in late 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and murdered around twelve hundred people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.
